Record Setting Performances

Everyone is talking about 21-year old Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy’s early lead in the British Open, thanks to shooting a record-tying 63 today.  This was only the 8th time a player has shot 63 in the British Open, and only the 22nd time it has happened in any of the Majors, putting young McIlroy into the company of some of the greatest golfers of our time.

I also want to point out last week’s amazing performance by Paul Goydos in the John Deere Classic, where he shot a 59 in the opening round, which helped him to finish second overall and qualify for this week’s British Open Championship.

In some ways these two men couldn’t be more different.  McIlroy is seen as a young up-and-comer, while not long ago people were writing the 46-year old Goydos off.  His great finish at the John Deere Classic has demonstrated that with his continued dedication and determination there’s going to be a lot more to see from the veteran player.
