The golf world was taken by surprise this weekend with the victory of virtually unknown South African Louis Oosthuizen at the British Open. The 27-year old, who has been mentored by fellow South African and legendary golfer Ernie Els, took home his first major title by an incredible 7-stroke margin. This also resulted in Oosthuizen moving up in the global men’s golf rankings from 54th to 15th.
Another British Open contender who has jumped up in the overall rankings is 21-year old Rory McIlroy, who I wrote about last week after his amazing 63 in the opening round at St. Andrews. Despite a poor second round performance, McIlroy rallied to a tie for third place (along with Henrik Stenson and Paul Casey), which moved him up the overall rankings from 9th to 7th top men’s golfer worldwide.
Overall it was a good weekend for the young up-and-comers, but as the season progresses we will have to wait and see how long they can maintain this momentum.
