How to Become a Great Ball Striker

One of the main things that Black Belt Golf focuses on is the fundamentals.  Each sport has basic fundamentals that need to be mastered in order to become good or great at that sport.  For example, most people do not realize that the basic fundamentals in a set up position are very similar to other sports.  Look at a baseball player set up to catch a fly ball, look at a tennis player get ready to return a shot, a soccer player getting ready to kick a ball, a martial artist getting ready to perform a squat, and a football player getting ready to catch a football.  If you really take a hard look at all of these different athletes, the set up is very similar in all sports.  The athlete has their knees bent a little bit, they have their rear end out a little, their back is slightly bent over from the hips and their head is up.  Why is this important to understand?  If the golfer does not have the proper set-up to the golf ball, they can have the best swing in the world, but their balance will be off which will affect the ball striking ability in a negative manner.

The other item besides the set-up is making things simple for the golfer to allow them to become a great ball striker.  Hitting golf balls in the driving range is very important, but if you look at the top pros, they really work on their short game more than their long game.  One of the great drills that will work on both your short game and your long game is the 20 to 40 your pitch shot.  You have to get in your set-up position and you have to make about a ¼ to ½ swing to make this shot.  As you practice this more, you develop your touch and feel of becoming a great ball striker because all of us golfers know that a pitch shot is the shorter version of a long swing.  So, instead of trying to drill Drivers out on the driving range which causes a golfer to lose balance and develop bad habits, we at Black Belt Golf would rather see the golfer work on pitch shots in their practice session.  Notice when you go out to practice these pitch shots, you are not swinging hard but it is smooth and you are working on timing which is an important attribute of becoming a great ball striker.

The Black Belt Golf DVD focuses on the basic fundamentals of martial arts.  Notice in the DVD that when the squats are being performed how much the exercise mirrors the set-up of a golfer getting ready to swing the golf club.

As final thought, the more that the golfer can get the basics and the fundamentals mastered, the more the golfer’s scores are going to start coming down.
